Humble Beginnings

We’ve decided to launch an urban farm. Inspired by Bowser, the red footed tortoise that lives in our home, we have named this endeavor Tortoise Greens to borrow from the image of this 220 million old specie and embody the slow and steady resilience it has taken to survive that long.

Our first product to bring to market will be microgreens for 3 main reasons.

  1. Microgreens are a nutrient dense superfood with up to 40X more nutritional value per weight when compared to full grown vegetables.
  2. Microgreens require very little space to grow. I am able to start a commercial level operation out of an 8X10 shed in my backyard.
  3. Microgreens take very little time to grow. Most varieties harvest in under a week after planting, with some taking up to 2 weeks.

As we build a network of distribution for the microgreens we are also developing other product to bring to market. Full grown and baby herbs and lettuces are currently in development along with mushrooms. We are also looking into root vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, beans and peas. The hope is to be able to expand production into a larger facility within the next 6-9 months as we build our catalog of genetics and plant stock and prepare to scale production to meet our new level of allowances.

This is no easy task, and one we definitely do not take lightly, but it is a necessary one as we are ultimately focused on providing locally grown sustainable organic food to our community, while creating a road map for others to do the same in theirs. Join us on our journey, we hope to hear about yours along the way.
